Huck’s mean trick on Jim and his apology

from Huckleberry Finn, Volume 1 by Mark Twain

/

about

A mind racked with guilt to the point of nihilism commits out of it an act never to be forgiven. An irreparable rift separates the two once fast friends, fostering a silent hatred which burns, inextinguishable, in their private hearts. Schadenfreude is free to fester in a mind which has rejected remorse, and in one wasted by the efforts of a monstrous institution takes root a hatred of he safe from its tendrils who would deceive a prisoner for the sake his own puerile delight. If you look into your own heart, and you find nothing wrong there, what is there to worry about? What is there to fear?
